Not seen the remake of The Magnificent Seven but I doubt I'm missing anything.

There are certain films that remakes work for but I always thing some films just should be left alone. So, the original The Italian Job is a good example. So good, i won't even watch the remake. A timeless classic that should not have been copied.

I would imagine that Wiig and McCarthy couldn't distance themselves from it fast enough either!

The Coens' True Grit was excellent. It was nominated for 10 Oscars including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Score. It rates very highly on Rotten Tomatoes, (96% positive reviews) and scored 80% on Metacritic.

Plus, I liked it.

Get Carter, the Michael Caine original was a classic, gritty and filthy in 70's Newcastle. the remake was a poor, poor imitation.

any Hollywood remake of a Korean/Japanese classic

I notice that hammer-Ed has mentioned Cape Fear in this category.

As a matter of interest film critics have regularly voted it as one of the best re makes.

FWIW if you have watched the modern De Niro version the original Robert Mitchum film pales in comparison.

The Pacino Scarface is a good film. Apparently they're remaking it again soon with a script by the Coen Brothers. Seeing as they wrote and directed the abysmal Ladykillers and True Grit remakes I expect this to be really shit.

Scarface, Peninsular, Meet the Parents, Oldboy, The Jackal, Robocop

Another vote for the Italian Job, dreadful an insult for all those involved in the original.

The taking of Pelham 123, another pile of sh@t!

Bungo - they originally planned 2 more squeals to go with the first remake film but it did so badly they knocked the idea of the "following 2 movies" on the head!

Every remake of the FA Cup 1980.

Even the 2006 version was ruined by the ending.

100% agree. Instead of a sweet little old lady we had a black woman with a frightening presence and a black bloke whose every other word was fuck or fucking. Of course Tom Hanks is no Alec Guinness and failed miserably in the role, and the film was an abomination.

Gus Van Sant's pointless remake of Psycho.

I forgot a couple in Carrie and Ben Hur. Whilst the Charlton Heston version was a remake in itself why anyone would try and remake a film that won 11 Oscars is beyond me.

I saw the stage adaptation of the lady killers with Peter capaldi in the Alec Guinness role was really well made and very funny

Re: Worst remakes of good films
I'm not sure the Coen Bros remake of The Ladykillers is a actually a terrible movie.

It's just pointless, ill-advised and not in the same league as the timeless original.

Tom Hanks instead of Alec Guinness is bad enough, but a bunch of relatively talentless nobodies instead of a stellar supporting cast comprising Cecil Parker, Herbert Lom, Peter Sellars and the wonderful Katie Johnson - I don't think so.
